Notice of premium discounts for hurricane loss mitigation in Florida

** Important information about your homeowners policy**

Proactive home protection

At Chubb, your safety and security are our top priorities.

We also want to help reduce the chances of damage to your home due to hurricane and tropical storms — and potentially reduce your premiums in the process. To encourage our clients to take proactive steps to protect their homes, we offer discounts on homeowners insurance premiums for implementing certain measures that can help reduce the likelihood of damage to your home due to hurricane and tropical storm force winds. These discounts can make a substantial difference in your insurance costs while ensuring your property is better prepared for the challenges of hurricane season.

2001 Florida Building Code (FBC)

Your home is eligible for a premium discount if it was built on or after January 1, 2002.

Roof covering

Roof coverings that meet 2001 FBC guidelines, such as reinforced concrete roof decking, can reduce the risk of wind damage.

Reinforced concrete roof deck

Concrete decks are roof structures composed of cast-in-place or pre-cast structural concrete designed to be self-supporting and integrally attached to the wall/support system.

Roof deck attachment

Installing the roof deck using 2” or 2-1/2” nails spaced at 6” from the edge of the plywood and 12” in the field of the plywood, instead of staples, can help prevent roof damage.

Roof-to-wall connection

Using “toe nails”, hurricane straps or clips, single or double wraps, can secure the beams of the roof to the walls to help prevent the roof from being lifted off by strong winds.

Roof shape

Hip roof shapes (sloped on all four sides like a pyramid) are considered the best option as they are better able to withstand high pressure winds.

Secondary water resistance

Installing a layer of protection between the shingles and the plywood underneath can help protect the building if the shingles blow off.

Shutters

Installing hurricane shutters or impact-resistant windows and sliding glass doors can help protect your home from flying debris during a storm.

Investing in hurricane mitigation measures not only helps protect your property but can provide peace of mind during the storm season. We encourage you to take steps to prepare your home for potential hurricane and tropical storms and take full advantage of these premium discount opportunities.
